10:01 pm
get into detail or step on the investigation you can bet he will be relieved that this has been taken care of. but we have to caution there are reports about other places being searched but this is unfolding the second suspect has been taken alive but there is a lot we don't know but you can bet the president will not give us the point* by point bulletin about what we know so far. he lets the fbi take the lead but is an opportunity for the relief he feels but also speak to the nation as he did monday to reassure the nation but we have been through this is a difficult through -- few days. >> end of the note to me to
10:02 pm
have this news conference, they lifted the shelter in place order across boston to say it is shut down is the underestimation and. we have a crew of 6418 people working downtown boston at the time there are no food domino's stores, the trip from the airport to the area where the bombing happened it took less than 10 minutes without speeding. i don't know of bostonian who could find that have been at 5:00 in the afternoon on a friday so everybody participated and sheltered in place and authorities said they hoped as we search hysteria going house-to-house looking under the porches and ever wear
10:03 pm
one negative to find absolutely nothing and but now let's pause while they do. good evening from watertown massachusetts we interrupt you to bring the president of united states on the heels of the announcement of the second of to a rest in the case of the boston marathon bombing that happened monday afternoon. behind me the mayor of boston and the governor of massachusetts, the police
10:04 pm
chief and dignitaries came for to tell us a 19 year-old suspect under a t.a.r.p. at 67 franklin st. covered up and pleading. he has been injured in a firefight with police last night when his older brother , suspect number one died and he took the vehicle as they threw bombs and hand grenades at police, the second suspect back over his own brother then took off and eventually went on foot and it is our understanding of residents here called police to say i see blood in my shed and i lifted a tarpon there is a man pleading underneath. authorities tried to talk him down and he exchanged gunfire so he was armed and eventually authorities
10:05 pm
surrounded him and for able to taken into custody. he is injured and he is at mass general. we can learn much more as the president steps to the microphone. >> our nation is in debt to the people of boston and massachusetts. after a vicious attack on their city, bostonian says responded with resolve and determination as their partners in this investigation boston police and state and local police among the commonwealth responded with professionalism and bravery over five days because of there determined efforts we have closed an important chapter in this tragedy i have been briefed earlier this evening by a director molar after monday i directed the full resources of the federal government to
10:06 pm
be helped the investigation helped security as needed and the past week close coordination between federal state and local officials sharing information moving swiftly to track down leads has been critical to the effort they all worked as they should and we are extremely grateful and we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to all outstanding law-enforcement professionals. they got -- of every day and put on their uniform to keep us safe and don't always know what to expect. our thoughts are those who were wounded in pursuit and we pray for full recovery. we also send prayers' to the collier family. he was born to be a police officer said his ccief at m.i.t..
10:07 pm
just 26 years old and as his family has said he died bravely in the line of duty duty, doing what he committed his life to doing doing, serving and protecting others. we are grateful to him. there are still many unanswered questions. among them, why did young men who grew up and studied3 here as part of our community and country resort to such violence? how did they plan and carry out attacks and did they receive help? the family of those killed so senselessly deserve answers. the wounded some of whom have to learn how to stand and walk and live again have answers. so i instructed the intelligence community for the necessary resources
10:08 pm
to collect intelligence and protect citizens. we refuse to be terrorized and they failed because we @%ll not waver from the character and the compassion and the values that define us as a country nor will we break the bonds that hold us together as americans. that american spirit stays true to the unity and diversity that makes us strong like no other nation
10:09 pm
in the world. with this stage of reporting , with twitter and3 to latch onto any bit of information tear jump to conclusions but when a tragedy like this happens with public safety at risk and the stakes so high it is important we do this right. that is why rehab investigations. that is why we gather the court that is why we take care not to rush to judgment3 about the motivations of these individuals or entire groups of people. after all one thing that makes america of the greatest nation on earth but also what makes boston such a great city is we welcome people all over the world every face, ethnicity and
10:10 pm
corner of the world. as we continue to other more about why and how this tragedy happened, let's make sure we sustain that spirit. we think of the wounded still struggling to recover rethink of crystal campbell campbell, we think of ling su lu and martin richard. they reflect the diversity and beauty of our country sharing a great american experience together. finally let me say even with so much attention focused on the events in boston understandably we have also seen a tight-knit community in texas devastated by a terrible explosion. i blind them to know that they are not forgotten. our thoughts and prayers are
10:11 pm
with the people of west, texas where so many people lost their lives and lost their homes and many injured and many are still missing. i talked to governor period and the mayor and i pledge that they will have the resources they need to recover and rebuilding in the one everybody in texas to know we will follow through with those commitments. it has been a tough week we have seen the character of our country once more we have the courage and resilience and spirit to overcome these challenges to move forward as one nation under god, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. thank you very much. >> president obama speaking at the white house on the heels of the announcement of the rest from the boston
10:12 pm
marathon bombing. found in a boat under a t.a.r.p. in someone's backyard and that full motor will be coming up next on credits show i m shepherd smith from watertown massachusetts civic now continuing coverage with the fox news channel and greta has a special guest tonight we will be live throughout the evening into the early morning hours now over two years. >> they give we have two more hours there is a lot of news coming in and another hour with shepherd smith so much news coming in because there are unanswered questions but to night the good news is captured the boston marathon bombing suspect is in police custody
10:13 pm
in a few minutes ago this picture came into fox news channel you can see the bloody the suspect in the ambulance. he was hiding in about that was stored outside a watertown held. robert duffy is the son of the homeowner. thank you for joining us. >> how are you? greta: tell me exactly what happened. spanish-speaking on behalf of the family there was a period of time we did not know exactly what was transpiring just like you there is so much information in coming. we were notified by a french there was a franklin street home on the television i spun 180 degrees on the television i saw my a mother
10:14 pm
and father's home in the immediate horror swept through the end of broke down crying because we tried to call, the phone was busy for almost 30 minutes, we tried so phones neither david nor mine that thhre were taking the phone up, my sister was static and it is absolute horror because we see the bullets gunfire erupts and everything is unfurling and finally as i left my home to go to my father's house to see why nobody was picking up the cell phone my sister notified me that my mother had contacted her and she and david were both safe that david had come across
10:15 pm
the suspect as soon as the bay and was lifted they went out and my mother's health is failing that is why i am speaking on behalf of the family to respect their privacy. they went out for fresh air finally after a long winter and david walked around and the wind had picked up the t.a.r.p. on the boat in they had lifted that he found a strange and lifted -- went to a closer look and a strap was cut, not toward or reward but deliberately cut then he was strange style then noticed a small amount of blood in the area then he took his stepladder for the boat and went under the tarp
10:16 pm
and saw a small pool of blood then looked forward and because the tarp of scared this of might he saw what he thought to be believed a crumpled body bloodied in the front of the boat and immediately panicked and dropped off a ladder and called the 91 and followed the s.w.a.t. and physical police presence right there in that neighborhood and they descended on him and immediately evacuate a that is why this all phone-number left behind. and a fall in line was busy. that is why they could not find them over 40 minutes. in the most important thing now is the suspect has been apprehended it is a shame to
10:17 pm
unfurl in the backyard of my parents but nobody plans this. it is not like a lottery ticket. greta: it is good news that your mother and stepfather are fine and of course, there was a lot of applauding. did your stepfather say anything to see say anything back? >> there was no communication between the two of us to verify what was said if things were said and space my stepfather very well he is a very quiet man in general and kept to himself and probably, again assuming piqued his head into his boat his beloved prize and saw the pool of blood and you begin with what has taken place with the media 24 hours of
10:18 pm
nonstop, it was probably always won, two, three, he knew what was going on and dropped out of the boats in the first instinct was 911. no conversation coming gunshots were fired and people were shot up the street and in is in police officer shot and killed for reason and unfortunate losses at the marathon finish line was senseless. knowing him he dropped off the ladder and walked away for to call 911. >> how far was the shooting this morning from their home ? >> without walking it it was less than 3/8 of a mile. greta: the good news is they are fine. and he is in custody thank
10:19 pm
you for joining us. we are now joining with my colleague shepard smith lied in watertown. have you seen that picture of the suspect in custody and he looks like he has blood all over his face but it it looks brittle the key is in rough shape. nothing to match the shape of the other people. >> frankly we were set up to be broadcasting from another location i cannot see the television but he was injured basanites during the over night hours when they had a fire fight with police and the details are chilling the 26 rural police officer lost his life is the worst but consider the men in this vehicle throwing a bomb out the window at police and another of that pressure
10:20 pm
cooker bonds filled with the same ingredients that killed the boston marathon and threw that out the window in thankfully the top came off so we didn't do the damage from that of boston marathon and drumming homemade hand grenades and pipe bombs now i can see those pictures. we don't know the details of his condition but last night when that was going down it was an unbelievably chaotic scene and he backed his car over his brother's body then fled on foot then walk down this city in a way they have not seen in the history of this city waiting and hoping they would find the man and when they did there are the pictures of him he is on the right-hand side underneath the blue tarp able to exchange fire with police as they had him completely
10:21 pm
surrounded and he fought to the last minute and daintily no injuries -- officers were injured. authorities are still sweeping the area now pleading to find out more on that man's condition now at mass general in serious condition which suggests they are not life-threatening. he may be beaten up but hopefully he can talk to is heard more about what caused them to go on this incredible rampage. greta: rehabed live coverage in then we will hear from his sister and it is extraordinary it is hard to think almost the execution of the 26 show police officer and all the lights changed the coz day lost limbs how
10:22 pm
bad evil this is a for what he has imposed on so many people but we will hear about it later. and we will hear of life at@ midnight. >> for more on the capture of the bombing suspect mike joined us now. what can use the? mike: i sought a spontaneous celebration a pervaded you will people lined either side of the street you can see some remnants with the american flags and the people of cheer for the cars going by. at first they made a call it as you register vehicles came out they started to cheer for the s.w.a.t. teams , a tacttcal teams, paramedics who were part of this big effort. it is a genuine outpouring of support and gratitude for what these individuals did.
10:23 pm
for the lead up to that people crowding around a radio listening to the developments. they would let out a big cheer with a light is the individual was taken a life that may surprise you because some people said they would rather have to be ended never have to go through a trial but they are interested the fact the individual lived through this and they can find out what else he knew and what he was involved in and who else may be connected in the future has all the details sift out. and the crowd thought now is the time from that police officer that lost his life in the transit officer now that that life-threatening
10:24 pm
situation is over it is time to think about the people who were hurt in the process but other than that was a spontaneous parade, of burst of the motion and, in gratitude for those to put their lives at risk and to get out of the house. greta: i was here on monday and behind me people are happy to find out he was taken alive but we have to take a moment to think about the enormous amount of goodwill in this city. think of the people who rushed in to help anastasia bombs exploded bender says says, or delays and the entire city prosecutors, police officers it is unbelievable how many people joined in to catch
10:25 pm
this guy to put the nightmare behind them but and they have to learn how to walk. it is a horrible tragedy but at least today to that nightmare may be over. >> it was interesting. it could be summed up by standing on the street corner. one person's urine elbow into my ribs and said that's boston, eh? greta: it is interesting how he is arrested and taken into custody now the healing house to begin for what he did. thank you. >> please start tracking the
10:26 pm
surviving suspect through watertown in the explosive fodder -- firefight and one resident was caught up last night and again tonight he caught it on camera. >> the second part of this video. [bleep] [bleep] [bleep] [bleep] data is in a. they got him. they got him. that is it. greta: joining us with this story you have the two-part story so start with last
10:27 pm
night what did you see? >> last night i was driving back from southern new jersey and arrived to watertown and did not know obviously the defense would come to watertown but i found myself in a situation where i went out to my car to get my suitcase and i heard a bomb go off behind me and immediately gunfire and at the time where the bomb had gone off it was easy for me to jump in my car then go back in my house. it was a difficult situation because i love the house i was detained by police as a possible suspect that was last night but tonight was a different story and being back at the house we had that day and on leaving and it was palatable.
10:28 pm
they lifted it and you knew something bade was about to go down. the residence you knew the authorities were centering right there and i have been to capture that video as i was walking to try to get to my car to leave watertown, the shootout happened. greta: what was your level of the year and tear? >> item no fear or terror, we were tense the whole time that it was obvious why enforcement but if which the amount of law enforcement in watertown was impressive in during their in the day and saw what had come into my apartment with the room by room search and the parameters were -- search and it is clear there
10:29 pm
were working hard to track down with a second suspect was hiding greta: how far was the house with the bow by your home? >> to 200 yards. it was right next door. and gunshots are very loud in person. it was too close. greta: describe how you feel tonight. >> mixed emotions emotions, obviously. thoughts are with people who suffered great losses and people that are struggling with injuries sustained and those who have loved ones that are hurt but in watertown? it is a gigantic relief and i am very proud to be from
10:30 pm
boston. i feel honored to be from boston to be honest. greta: i of so happy for that people from watertown and the people in the hospital to one week ago participating in a marathon and tonight they have to learn to walk with a prosthesis and as people applaud the have to remember this is an ongoing problem and a tragedy that will affect others for ever. some go through if for a couple days but this has destroyed a lot of lives. i have mixed feelings and i suspect you feel that way. >> very much. you cannot be from boston to have a memory of the marathon whether you are a
10:31 pm
runner or you just go there as a rite of passage to bring in spring. it is such a close-knit community that these are very real with the people that have died and every bet eight knows each other some way. but our thoughts are with the people who are suffering but it is a huge relief for the residents of watertown and that the first suspect that the second is in in custody. >> what would possess
10:32 pm
someone to me so evil? the one in custody tonight was granted asylum here in the united states then he became a citizen last september 11 then you think of the of reach then he does something like that. he saw that in the video at the end of the marathon and
10:33 pm
with the second blast they were rushing toward the victim's and the people that helped the victims, not no weighing or necessarily having a medical background but they helped out and today in in watertown seeing the police do what they did and law-enforcement is very impressive. people in watertown tonight are very relieved and there is some of reversing -- rejoicing. but there will always be people to help. greta: those of us not from watertown the tip our hats and down to the citizens to have helled, faq very much. greta: after a massive manhunt police tracking down
10:34 pm
dzhokar tsarnaev to a boat in the backyard. how did they do it? mark furman joins uss it is always fun to see the police almost to a surgical operation he is in custody and alive and question him to figure out his motives but it was a great operation to night? >> it certainly was. most of my questions as the perimeter was set up is was that large enough and was he able to get outside the perimeter and was there enough personnel tutsi-led off? the answer to both is yes. i have a feeling he got as far as he could until the perimeter started to close and then he found the boat. greta: i understand that the bombing was planned obviously they had to make the bomb and figure out a
10:35 pm
way to deliver and drop them and get out of there but then they stuck around. this is their neighborhood and a city and ttey never left and that is baffling. >> i would agree and i don't suspect we could answer that question. i and my sure he will but if you look at the evidence they did not apply all of the items that the marathon is a lie suspected another location they did not count on the fbi investigation of this surveillance video and the ability to look at multiple photographs to narrow down to both individuals planting those bombs. i think they thought they would have more time. >> there will not get away with it because those were plastered across the of
10:36 pm
world. everybody saw the videos and was ready to call in the tip. that was very smart of the fbi to release them. obviously they were smart enough to know the media would run with them and to make the day should have gotten out earlier i don't know but he has been taken into custody alive. what do want to ask him. >> i just want to know how he was recruited. is seems plagued his brother radicalized and he seemed like he was on a pass to be a productive citizen but there has to be a mentor, a trader, contact in this country or with the brother coming back and there has to be a link. this is international
10:37 pm
terrorism is the edgy hottest extremist -- jihadist extremists. if anybody insisted that any way or do whatever during. and what baffles me is on a request from another country it is an extremist. but they had to keep the information but anything into a database. greta: that maybe they've been looking for him to release the video. >> i agree. greta: but they had to find him.
10:38 pm
thank you for joining us. 102 hours that is a much time passed from the rest of suspect #2 a registered student at dartmouth and there is news tonight what is the news from there? >> the process that mark was telling us about is now ongoing and in new bedford massachusetts above the cave that is rare is started with three apparent college students, two men and a woman who lived in a dormitory rental complex associate with the university of massachusetts at dartmouth that is where dzhokar tsarnaev attended classes and he was then that apartment and they have taken into custody three people who were his roommates at some point* they are not under a rest
10:39 pm
but obviously the big question is how did this young man that got a scholarship at a prestigious high-school here in the boston area every talk to his friends earlier today. that they smoked pot and listen to rap music like most teenagers. what was the transformation or the trigger? to transfer images the islamic jihadist terrace to kill the infidels to end up in serious condition that is one of the questions the nation will have to face to talk about the internet and the influence of.
10:40 pm
greta: teeeight activity around the country you one thing that we face now and as of right now there are three potential students not under arrest as they find out more about him and also people are cheering the sirens and hulking with gratitude and relief and talking to the police commissioner of boston i asked and are there any members of the dzhokar tsarnaev family coming forward? his mother lived in cambridge police secured that earlier today and there is extended family in the area and ask the commissioner if they have a record of the authorities receiving any tips after the videos were released saying we know them? and they are our cousins or
10:41 pm
members of the family and the commissioner tells me that they did not hear anything. greta: that means you're under arrest you can bring somebody in for questioning but did the police say they are in custody because that is something more sinister? did they use the terms of mr.? >> the term is in custody but not under arrest some may be some legal maneuvering but that is the exact term that we have. >> that is the terminology there using but the prosecutor may be concerned about that. police capture the suspected life. but will he tell them? we are in boston and we will be right back. stay with us we have more coming up including the sister of these two boys.
